When considering a heat pump, you may wonder why we charge for our surveys when some companies offer them for free.
At Menai Heating, we believe that getting the design right from the very beginning is essential to ensuring your heat pump performs efficiently for years to come.
That’s why our surveys involve much more than a simple home visit and quotation. Every property is different, so we take the time to understand your home’s individual heating requirements through detailed assessments, advanced heat loss calculations and specialist system design.
Our survey fee reflects the time, technical expertise and detailed work that goes into designing a system specifically for your home.
So, what exactly goes into a Menai Heating survey, and why does it matter?
1. Comprehensive Home Assessment
Before designing your system, we carry out a detailed assessment of your property to understand its heating requirements and identify the most suitable installation approach.
This includes:
- Property construction: Assessing room dimensions, wall and floor types, insulation levels, windows and other factors that influence how much heat your home loses.
- Existing heating system: Reviewing your radiators, pipework and other components to determine what can be retained and what may need upgrading. Wherever possible, we aim to make use of your existing system to help minimise installation costs without compromising performance.
- Your heating habits: Understanding your current energy usage, preferred temperatures, hot water requirements and how you plan to use your heating system.
- Water quality testing: Assessing the condition of your existing heating system water to identify potential issues, such as corrosion or contamination, that could affect the performance and reliability of your new system.
- Heat pump positioning: Identifying suitable locations for the outdoor unit, considering airflow, exposure to prevailing winds, noise and accessibility.
- Hot water cylinder positioning: Assessing available space and identifying the most practical location for your hot water cylinder and associated equipment.
This detailed assessment helps us identify potential requirements early, giving you a clearer understanding of the proposed installation and associated costs.
2. Advanced Heat Loss Calculations
Using the information collected during your home assessment, we carry out detailed room-by-room heat loss calculations.
Rather than estimating the required heat pump size based on your property’s overall size, we calculate how much heat each individual room needs, considering its dimensions, construction, insulation and other relevant factors.
These calculations allow us to:
- Select a heat pump that’s appropriately sized for your home.
- Determine whether your existing radiators can provide sufficient heat.
- Design the system to operate at the lowest practical flow temperatures.
- Reduce the risk of unnecessary energy consumption caused by incorrect system sizing.
The aim is to design a system that keeps your home comfortably warm while using energy as efficiently as possible.
You receive a copy of the full calculations to keep. If you decide to use another installer, you can share those calculations with them, so the work you have paid for remains available to you whichever company you choose.
3. Heating System Hydraulic Assessment
Our advanced training and real-world energy monitoring data allow us to better understand how pipework and water flow affect heat pump performance. We use this knowledge to assess your existing heating system, identify where upgrades may be necessary and retain suitable pipework wherever possible, helping to minimise installation costs without compromising efficiency.
4. Learning From Real-World Heat Pump Performance
Our commitment to efficient heat pump design doesn’t stop once a system has been installed.
At Menai Heating, we have also carried out a heat pump monitoring project, collecting and analysing real-world performance data from installed systems.
This allows us to better understand how heat pumps perform in everyday conditions, beyond theoretical calculations and manufacturer specifications.
By studying this data, we can identify opportunities to refine our approach to system design, improve efficiency and make more informed decisions for future installations.
It’s part of our commitment to continually learning, improving and using real-world evidence to deliver better heating systems for our customers.
Why Does All This Matter?
A heat pump’s efficiency isn’t determined by the equipment alone. It depends on how well the entire heating system has been designed to work with your property.
Our detailed survey and design process involves specialist knowledge, technical calculations and considerable time both inside and outside your home.
Our surveyor typically completes just two surveys per day, allowing us to give each property the attention it deserves. Alongside this, there are costs associated with specialist heat loss software, travel and preparing your tailored system design and quotation, regardless of whether you proceed with an installation.
Our £250 survey fee helps cover the time, expertise and resources involved in this process, allowing us to thoroughly assess your property, identify potential challenges early and avoid unnecessary upgrades wherever possible.
Because at Menai Heating, our goal isn’t simply to install a heat pump. It’s to design a complete heating system that delivers comfort, efficiency and reliable performance for years to come.
Thinking About Switching to a Heat Pump?
Through the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), eligible households can receive £7,500 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump, increasing to £9,000 for qualifying homes currently heated by oil or LPG.
At Menai Heating, we can help you understand your options, check your eligibility and design a heating system suited to your home.
