Air-to-Air Heat Pumps
High-performance heating and cooling for your home

What is an air-to-air heat pump?
An air-to-air system is an electric low-carbon solution that takes outside air, compresses it and uses it to heat your home, much like an air-to-water heat pump system. During the summer, it works in reverse to cool your home.
The main difference between an air-to-air and air to water system is, air-to-air rather than sending the heat to after in your radiators which then heats your home, it goes through ducts straight to the air in your home.
How Does It Work?
An air-to-air heat pump can provide both cooling in summer and heating in winter by moving heat from one place to another rather than generating it.
Air-Conditioning Mode
- When the unit is used as a cooling system, the indoor unit draws in warm air from your home using a fan.
- This heat is transferred to a refrigerant, which absorbs the heat energy as it passes through the indoor unit.
- The refrigerant carries the heat to the outdoor unit, where it is released into the outside air.
- With the heat removed, the indoor unit circulates cool, refreshing air back into your home. The refrigerant then returns to the indoor unit to repeat the cycle.
Heating Mode
- When used as a heating system, the outdoor unit draws in outside air using a fan. Even on cold winter days, the air contains heat energy that the system can absorb.
- This heat is transferred to a refrigerant, which absorbs the heat energy before being compressed. Compressing the refrigerant significantly increases its temperature.
- The hot refrigerant travels to the indoor unit, where the heat is transferred into your home. A fan then circulates warm air throughout the room, providing comfortable, efficient heating.
- After releasing its heat indoors, the refrigerant cools and returns to the outdoor unit, where it absorbs more heat from the outside air. This continuous cycle keeps your home warm.

Benefits of Air-to-Air
Year-Round Comfort
Enjoy efficient cooling during the summer and reliable heating throughout the winter, all from one system.
Ideal for Smaller Properties
Compact outdoor units make them well suited to flats, apartments and homes where space is limited.
Low-Carbon Solution
An energy-efficient alternative to traditional heating and standalone air conditioning, helping to reduce your home's carbon emissions.
Solar Compatible
If you have solar panels, your system can use the electricity they generate, helping to reduce running costs even further.
Supplementary Heating
Install an air-to-air heat pump as your primary heating and cooling system, or keep your existing heating system and use it for air conditioning with the added benefit of efficient backup heating.

What to expect from the installation
Register Your Interest
Submit an enquiry online or contact us by phone, and a member of our team will be in touch.
Phone Consultation
We’ll discuss your desired measures, assess your property's suitability, and provide you with an estimated quotation.
Site Survey
Once you've provisionally accepted the estimated quotation amount, a surveyor will visit your property to carry out a detailed assessment, gathering all the technical information needed to design the correct system for your home.
Airtightness Checks
This will be followed up by a visit to carry out air testing and assess insulation levels, allowing us to determine the accurate air permeability of your home for heat loss calculations.
Heat Loss Calculations
Using the air testing results, we complete full room-by-room heat loss calculations to accurately determine the system size and radiator requirements, ensuring optimal efficiency and comfort.
Bespoke System Design
Using the survey data, and any amendments requested from yourself we produce a full heat pump design tailored to your property, including system layout and performance specifications, and quotation for your review and approval.
Quotation & Approval
Once your quotation has been approved, we’ll ask you to sign the relevant contracts. Following this, we’ll arrange a suitable date for your installation.
Installation & Handover
Our engineers install and commission the system in line with industry standards, ensuring it is set up correctly and operating efficiently before handover.
Aftercare
We will take care of all guarantees and MCS documentation. We also offer system monitoring and servicing to help maintain performance, efficiency, and long-term reliability. Our customer liason officer will also conduct a post visit after the installation to ensure you are satisfied with the works.
Frequent Questions
How will I heat my hot water?
An air-to-air heat pump only heats and cools the air within your home, it does not provide domestic hot water. However, we can install an electric hot water cylinder with an immersion heater to supply your hot water independently.
If you’re already using an existing hot water cylinder or an air-to-water heat pump for hot water, these can often continue to be used alongside your new air-to-air system. We’ll assess your current setup and recommend the most suitable solution for your home.
can i add a2a indoors units to my existing a2w system
Unfortunately not. The air-to-water outdoor units are not compatible with the air-to-air indoor units, so you would need upgrade the whole system.
Can i get any government grants towards my installation
There is a £2,500 BUS grant towards the installation of an air-to-air heat pump system. Please see the BUS page for more information.
