Air Source Heat Pumps
Sustainable heating made simple

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An air source heat pump (ASHP) is a renewable heating system that works like a boiler but without burning fuel. Instead, it takes heat from the outside air, even in cold weather, and uses it to warm your home and hot water. It works similarly to a fridge but in reverse, moving heat into your home rather than out of it.

Why Choose a Heat Pump?

Efficient
Air source heat pumps are highly efficient heating systems, capable of achieving efficiencies of up to 400%, significantly outperforming traditional boilers, which typically operate at a maximum efficiency of around 98%. 400% efficiency means that for every 1 kilowatt (kW) of electricity consumed, 4 kW of heat energy in generated. This is possible because heat pumps transfer heat rather than generate it through burning fuel.

Sustainable
Unlike traditional heating systems like oil or gas boiler, heat pumps don’t rely on burning fossil fuels, which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Instead, they extract heat from the air, producing far fewer carbon emissions, contributing to a more sustainable home and environment.

Cost Saving
Air source heat pumps offer cost savings by delivering more heat for less energy. This means lower running costs, especially when paired with solar panels and operated for optimal performance.

Comfortable
Air source heat pumps are equipped with advanced temperature control technology. This feature automatically adjusts the indoor temperature based on changes in the outdoor climate, ensuring a consistently comfortable environment throughout the year. By responding intelligently to external conditions, weather compensation enhances system efficiency and can help reduce overall energy consumption.

Durable
With proper maintenance, an ASHP can last 20-25 years, outperforming the typical 10–15-year lifespan of a gas boiler. Making it a smart long-term investment. To ensure a long lifespan and optimal performance, it’s essential to properly maintain your heat pump. An annual service by a qualified technician is recommended to check system components, ensure efficiency, and address any potential issues before they develop into costly repairs. Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your system but also helps it operate at peak efficiency year-round.

Frequent Questions
What impacts the efficiency of my heat pump system?
The efficiency of a heat pump can be influenced by factors such as the quality of the system design, correct sizing, insulation levels in the property. We carefully assess and optimise to ensure everything is designed for maximum efficiency before installation. Ongoing efficiency also depends on how the system is operated, including the use of appropriate control settings and ensuring it is regularly maintained and serviced.
Can the heat pump provide hot water?
Yes! An air source heat pump can be connected to a water cylinder to heat the water for domestic use.
What training do your installers have?
At Menai, we go beyond standard industry training. All our installers, engineers, and surveyors hold essential certifications (MCS, RECC, TrustMark, CHAS, NAPIT). We also invest in advanced training from leading experts such as Heat Geek Awakenings, Warmur Heating Academy, Ultimate Renewables, and we’re Vaillaint Platinum Installers.
Do i need to service my heat pump?
Yes, like any heating system, a heat pump should be serviced annually by a qualified technician. Regular servicing helps maintain performance, ensures the system runs efficiently, and can prevent potential issues before they become costly repairs. It also ensures your warranty is upheld. Visit our service page for more information.
Why is pipe sizing important?
Correct pipe sizing is essential for the efficient and effective operation of a heat pump system. If the pipes are too small, they can restrict flow and reduce efficiency, putting extra strain on the system. If they’re too large, the system may be less responsive and more expensive to install. Accurate sizing ensures optimal heat distribution, system performance, and long-term reliability.
