One system for heating and cooling
Perhaps the biggest advantage of an air-to-air system is its versatility.
During warmer weather, the system operates as air conditioning, removing heat from inside your home and transferring it outside.
When temperatures fall, the process can effectively be reversed. The system extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it into your home, delivering warm air directly into the room.
That means the same unit keeping a bedroom cool in July could be keeping it warm in January.

An efficient way to heat a room
An air-to-air heat pump doesn’t generate heat in the same way as a traditional electric heater.
Instead, it uses electricity to move existing heat from one place to another. Even when it feels cold outside, there is still thermal energy available in the outdoor air for the system to extract.
This heat-pump principle means the system can deliver multiple units of heat for each unit of electricity it consumes, although actual efficiency will vary depending on factors including the system, outdoor temperature and how it is operated.
For households currently relying on direct electric heating in particular, this can make air-to-air heat pumps an interesting alternative worth considering.

Air-to-air systems use sleek, wall-mounted indoor units to deliver heating and cooling directly into the room, without the need for radiators or extensive wet heating pipework.
Installation can therefore be relatively quick and minimally disruptive.
Their compact wall-mounted design allows them to fit neatly into a range of spaces while providing both heating and cooling from the same system.

A useful partner for solar
Air-to-air heat pumps can also work particularly well as part of a wider home energy system.
If you already have solar panels, some of the electricity generated by your panels can contribute towards the electricity being used by your air-to-air system when generation and demand coincide.
There’s an especially useful relationship during summer: the sunnier conditions that create demand for cooling are also the conditions in which your solar panels are likely to be generating strongly.
Add battery storage and a suitable electricity tariff into the equation and there are even more opportunities to think about when your home generates, stores and uses its energy.
A main heating system or supplementary heating
Air-to-air heat pumps can be used in different ways depending on the property. As a primary heating system, they are generally better suited to smaller homes, flats, apartments, offices and other properties where the layout allows heat to be distributed effectively.
For larger homes, or properties with lots of separate rooms, an air-to-air system may be more practical as supplementary heating alongside an existing heating system. For example, it could provide additional warmth to a living area, home office, extension or another frequently used space.
