What is an air-to-air heat pump?
An air-to-air heat pump is an electric, low-carbon heating and cooling system that transfers heat rather than generating it. During winter it extracts heat from the outside air to warm your home, while in summer it reverses the process to remove unwanted heat and keep your home cool.
Benefits of Air-to-Air
Year-Round Comfort
Enjoy efficient cooling during the summer and reliable heating throughout the winter, all from one system.
Ideal for Smaller Properties
Compact outdoor units make them well suited to flats, apartments and homes where space is limited.
Low-Carbon Solution
An energy-efficient alternative to traditional heating and standalone air conditioning, helping to reduce your home's carbon emissions.
Solar Compatible
If you have solar panels, your system can use the electricity they generate, helping to reduce running costs even further.
Supplementary Heating
Install an air-to-air heat pump as your primary heating and cooling system, or keep your existing heating system and use it for air conditioning with the added benefit of efficient backup heating.

An air-to-air heat pump cannot directly heat your hot water, however a hot water cylinder with an immersion heater can be connected to an air-to-air system to heat you hot water.
Is an air-to-air heat pump right for me?
Suitable for:
- Properties wanting to utilise air conditioning
- Smaller properties, flat & apartments
- Open-plan homes
- Properties with a home office or outbuildings
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) Eligibility
You may be eligible for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant towards the cost of installing an air-to-air heat pump if:
- You own the property in England or Wales.
- The system is being installed to replace an existing fossil fuel or electric heating system.
- The air-to-air heat pump is designed to meet your property's space heating requirements.
- The installation is completed by an MCS-certified installer.
- The property has not previously received government funding for a low-carbon heating system.

Cwestiynau Cyffredin
Can i get any government grants towards my installation
There is a £2,500 BUS grant towards the installation of an air-to-air heat pump system. Please see the BUS section above for eligibility criteria.
Can an air-to-air heat pump heat my whole house?
Yes, it can. A single indoor unit can effectively heat and cool an open-plan area or individual room, while multiple indoor units can be installed throughout your home to provide whole-house heating and cooling. The right solution will depend on your property’s size, layout and insulation levels.
How will I heat my hot water?
An air-to-air heat pump only heats and cools the air within your home, it does not provide domestic hot water. However, we can install an electric hot water cylinder with an immersion heater to supply your hot water independently.
If you’re already using an existing hot water cylinder or an air-to-water heat pump for hot water, these can often continue to be used alongside your new air-to-air system. We’ll assess your current setup and recommend the most suitable solution for your home.
Can I replace my air-to-water heat pump with an air-to-air heat pump?
Yes, but it depends on your home’s heating and hot water requirements. An air-to-air heat pump provides heating and cooling by circulating warm or cool air through indoor units, but it does not heat radiators or provide domestic hot water. If you’re looking for a complete replacement, we’ll assess your property and recommend the most suitable solution for your needs.
How much does it cost to run?
Running costs depend on factors such as your electricity tariff, property size, insulation levels and how you use the system. Because air-to-air heat pumps transfer heat rather than generate it, they are highly efficient and can produce several units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. If you have solar panels, you will be able to reduce your running costs even further by using the electricity they generate.
Are air-to-air heat pumps noisy?
Modern air-to-air heat pumps are designed to operate quietly. Indoor units are typically no louder than a quiet conversation or a modern refrigerator, while outdoor units produce a gentle fan and compressor noise similar to an air-to-water heat pump. During your survey, we can recommend the most suitable location to minimise any potential noise.
