“How do you actually make sure a heat pump performs efficiently?”
The truth is that two identical heat pumps installed in similar homes can have very different running costs. The difference often isn’t the heat pump itself, it’s how well the system has been designed, installed, and optimised over time.

It Starts Long Before Installation
An efficient heat pump doesn’t happen by chance; it starts with careful design.
Every home is different, so before we recommend a heat pump, we take the time to understand both your property and how you use it. By gathering as much information as possible at the design stage, we can create a system that’s tailored specifically to your home, helping maximise efficiency, comfort and long-term performance.
Advanced Home Assessments
Before any design work begins, we carry out a comprehensive survey of your home, including:
- Room-by-room measurements
- Wall, floor and insulation types
- Existing heating system assessment
- What can be retained and what should be upgraded
- Your heating and hot water usage
- Heat pump and cylinder location
- Water quality testing
Air Tightness Testing
Air tightness testing helps us understand how much air escapes from your home through gaps and draughts. By including this in our design process where appropriate, we can improve the accuracy of our heat loss calculations and ensure the heat pump is neither oversized nor undersized.
Advanced Heat Loss Calculations
Using the information gathered during the survey, we use specialist software to calculate the heat loss for every room individually. This ensures the heat pump, radiators and controls are sized specifically for your property—rather than relying on assumptions.
Advanced Pipe Sizing
Using specialist design software, we calculate the correct pipe sizes and flow rates throughout the system. Correct pipe sizing helps the heat pump circulate water efficiently, reducing pressure losses and supporting better long-term performance.
Continuous Performance Monitoring
Our work doesn’t stop once the installation is complete. We monitor many of our heat pumps allowing us to analyse real-world performance, identify opportunities for improvement and apply those learnings to future installations. It’s one of the ways we continually refine our designs to deliver even better results for our customers.
Comissioning
Every system is carefully commissioned before it’s handed over, with the settings optimised for your home. This includes configuring controls such as weather compensation, ensuring the heat pump automatically adjusts its output to match the conditions outside. By fine-tuning these settings from the outset, we can help maximise efficiency while maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout your home.
Long-Term Reliability
We also focus on long-term reliability. Where existing pipework is reused, we carry out a thorough system clean to remove debris before the new heat pump is connected. We use premium fittings throughout our installations and, because we’re based in a coastal region, we apply a specialist anti-corrosion coating to every outdoor unit at no extra cost, helping protect it from the effects of salt and sea air.
How We Keep Improving Every Heat Pump
Most installers finish the job when your heat pump is switched on.
For us, that’s where the real work begins.
We monitor many of our installations using OpenEnergyMonitor, an independent platform that records how heat pumps perform in real homes across the UK. Instead of relying solely on predicted figures, we’re able to see exactly how our systems perform day after day, season after season.
Think of it like a fitness tracker for your heating system. It shows us how efficiently it’s working, allowing us to identify opportunities to fine-tune performance and continually improve future installations.
Every monitored system teaches us something new. Those insights don’t stay on a graph, they’re put into practice. Our monitored installations consistently achieve seasonal performance figures of 3.7 to over 4.2, significantly higher than the UK monitored average of around 2.8. The screenshot below shows our monitored installations. These figures are calculated using measured performance from real homes, not laboratory testing or manufacturer estimates.
While every property is different and performance will always vary depending on the home and how it’s used, we’re proud that our monitored systems consistently perform above the UK average, giving customers confidence that our approach delivers results where it matters most: in everyday use.
