Could You Get a Heat Pump for Less Than You Think?

With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme increasing to £9,000 for eligible oil and LPG-heated homes from 21 July 2026, many homeowners are starting to explore whether now is the right time to switch to a heat pump.

What many people don’t realise is that not every property requires a full heating system upgrade.

The Common Misconception

One of the biggest myths surrounding heat pumps is that you’ll always need:

  • Brand-new radiators
  • New pipework throughout the house
  • Major disruption and renovation work

While some properties do require upgrades to get the best performance from a heat pump, this isn’t always the case.

Every home is different, which is why a professional assessment is so important.

In Some Homes, a Heat Pump Can Be a Straight Swap

Many properties already have heating systems that are well suited to a heat pump.

If your existing radiators and pipework are capable of delivering the heat required throughout your home, there may be little need for extensive upgrades.

In these cases, the installation can be much simpler than many homeowners expect, with the focus being on replacing the existing boiler with a heat pump system.

What Determines Whether Upgrades Are Needed?

A heat pump works most efficiently when the heating system can distribute heat effectively around the property.

During a survey, we assess factors such as:

  • The size and condition of your radiators
  • Existing pipework
  • Heat loss from the property
  • Insulation levels
  • The overall heating demand of the home

Properties with good levels of insulation and lower heat loss often require fewer changes to the existing heating system.

Why EPC Ratings and Insulation Matter

A well-insulated home typically requires less energy to stay warm.

This means the heat pump doesn’t need to work as hard, and the existing heating system is more likely to be suitable.

While an EPC rating alone doesn’t determine whether a heat pump can be installed, homes with better energy efficiency often need fewer upgrades to achieve good performance.

The £9,000 Grant Could Make a Big Difference

For eligible oil and LPG-heated properties, the temporary increase in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could significantly reduce the cost of switching to a heat pump.

If your property requires minimal heating system upgrades, the grant could cover a substantial proportion of the installation cost.

In some cases, homeowners may find that the amount they need to contribute is far lower than they expected.
